Leila was born and raised in Cali, Colombia. She moved to the West Coast in 1992. Her father’s aunts and uncles were tailors and seamstresses in Bucaramanga, near Bogota, Colombia. Meanwhile, her mother’s side is filled with American home sewists who were clothing their family every day, including for special occasions. Leila’s namesake, her maternal great-grandmother, won prizes at the state fair for her delicate sewing.
It wasn’t until Leila was stuck with wedding dress alterations that made her clutch her bouquet right against her poorly fitted bodice, that her curiosity for sewing began and she swore she would never wear ill-fitting garments.
After 7 years of doing alterations and making custom garments for herself and an exclusive client pool, she started working with Erin Young Designs in Indianapolis, IN.
In the last 3 years, Leila has honed her skills for tailoring curvy and plus-size women. Fit is her passion and she will never let any of her brides feel as embarrassed as she did on the day of their wedding.
